6th Annual Kosher Karaoke on Christmas Eve
The tradition of dining at the only open business (usually a Chinese restaurant) on Christmas Eve has been a part of the Jewish-American experience for decades. We love the idea so much, we think it should be a Karaoke-American tradition. Reserve a suite on December 24th, and you’ll be treated to a Chinese buffet.
Whether you’d like to come in and sing “Jingle Bells” until you’re hoarse, or you want to rock like it’s any other night, we’ll be open. Suite rental is $7 per person per hour and includes dinner. Crazed last-minute shoppers, Grinches, and rockers of all religions are welcome.
Schlep on over to our reservation request form to get your slot reserved!
Our Gift Certificate Sale is Back!
For the past three years, we’ve committed to stuffing stockings with the gift of song. Our annual gift certificate sale returns Friday, November 29th and continues through December 30th.
Enable the karaoke addict in your office, family, or white elephant gift pool. Our gift certificates are on sale for 10% off face value. Choose a $20 certificate for $18, $50 for $45, or $100 for $90.
Gift certificates purchased during the sale are good any time from January 1, 2014 through the end of time; they never expire. Pick one up next time you’re in, or call any weekday from 9 am until 5 pm and we’ll mail it to you. And, we’re always available at reservations@voiceboxpdx.com.
Voicebox Opens Second Location As Popularity Grows
New SE location, opening in response to customer demand, offers more space and new features
PORTLAND, ORE. – (November 11, 2013) – Five years, to the day, after first introducing Asian-style, private suite karaoke to Portland, Voicebox will open its second entertainment venue in Southeast Portland’s Lower Morrison (LOMO).
After experiencing record growth in 2012, making weekend reservations a requirement, Voicebox surveyed customers and learned demand was high for a SE location. Its new location at 734 SE 6th Ave, is smack dab in the middle of Portland’s flourishing SE Morrison neighborhood.
“I’m thrilled to see how Portlanders have adopted the same love for this kind of karaoke that I first experienced in Seoul, South Korea,” said Voicebox Founder Scott Simon. “Gathering with friends in a private karaoke suite encourages deeper connections through song. We want our guests to leave with great memories they’ll treasure for years.”
In Asia, a karaoke box/private suite is the most popular type of karaoke venue, but is still relatively rare in the U.S. Private suites move guests away from the intimidating spotlight toward an intimate, positive group experience. Simon has seen so much interest that, in addition to adding a second location, he recently began leasing his Voicebox software system to other social entertainment venues in Portland and beyond. Simon and his partners plan to grow their technology business throughout the U.S. with a new venture titled Voicebox Industries.
Founder, Scott Simon, proudly sits atop a wall in Voicebox’s new Southeast location featuring aesthetically-thoughtful architecture with curved walls and an open beam ceiling.
What’s new at the SE location?
- Larger space (4,000 sq. ft.) and 8 suites, including a larger premier suite that fits up to 40 guests.
- Full-wall murals by Souther Salazar, a nationally acclaimed artist and recent Portland transplant.
- Two screens in every room – one on either side, allowing singing guests to better interact.
- A full bar that adds hard alcohol drinks to their acclaimed signature house-infused saké cocktails and local brews.
- An enlarged bar and dining area open to the public for those wanting to take a break, or who simply want to taste some saké and catch up with friends.
Salazar’s artwork transports the viewer into a vibrant and endless world of overlapping narratives and dreamscapes— half-remembered, half-imagined places where stories can develop and take on a life of their own.
Features imported from the first location at 2112 NW Hoyt will continue to give guests smartphone control of their suites and allow guests to manage their song queues, alter lighting effects and build their playlist in advance. Simon’s focus at both locations is to create comfortable settings for exceptional group experiences, combining superior service with a comfortable environment customized to harness the enjoyment of collective song.
Voicebox is now taking reservations for its new Southeast location. Guests can reserve the suite of their choice online at www.voiceboxpdx.com or over the phone by calling 503.303.8220.
About Voicebox
Voicebox is a box-style karaoke lounge with a location in Portland’s NW neighborhood and a new one opening on Portland’s close-in, Southeast side. As Portland’s first all private-suite karaoke lounge, it has inspired nationwide growth in Asian-style karaoke and now leases its proprietary technology to other social entertainment venues. Voicebox designed its locations to provide the perfect karaoke experience with multiple private suites to choose from, each equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including two mics, light dimmers, pitch adjustment, and other fun gadgets like the 18th century musical innovation known as the tambourine. Voicebox’s stellar reviews on Yelp have helped to make Voicebox the place to go for bachelorette and birthday parties. Voicebox’s suites surround a central bar offering fantastic food and drink to create a uniquely authentic experience. For more information visit voiceboxpdx.com.

Hosting a Young Adult Party
Perfect for Teens, Kids and Families
Chaperones
- If you’re hosting a party for kids 14 or older, an adult chaperone is not required. For younger kids, an adult must be present during the entire party.
- We love hosting family parties and events for young adults. Minors are welcome any time before 9pm Sundays-Thursdays and any time before 7PM on Fridays & Saturdays, and as a family-friendly business we make sure you have the privacy and comfort you expect.
- Regardless of age, we’ve found the following tips to be very helpful.
Food & Snacks
✔ Do bring cake, cupcakes, brownies, etc. “Finger friendly” sweets (cupcakes or cookies) work best at Voicebox, freeing up a hand to hold a microphone.
✔ Review our in-house menu in advance. It can be found here.
✖ No outside food is allowed in Voicebox, except for celebratory desserts. You may bring your own plates, forks, napkins or purchase a cake kit for $10.
✖ Don’t bring outside beverages of any kind, including soda, coffee and water. We supply every suite with pitchers of water, and offer sodas and juice for sale.
Decorating
✔ Balloons, banners, posters and streamers are great decorations for the suite, just don’t attach anything to the art work.
✖ Please don’t bring confetti, silly string, feather boas or glitter as they become a permanent part of the suite.
✖ Please don’t tape onto our murals or use anything other than painter’s masking tape to attach things to the wall. Also, please don’t cover the window on the door.
Song Selection
✔ Review our song selection with the guest of honor prior to the party. Our song lists can be found here: Songs & Playlists. It’s best to come prepared with up to 30 songs, as our songbooks can be pretty overwhelming for the kids.
✔ Be proactive in your child’s song selection process, as some songs might not be appropriate for certain age groups. We defer to you as the parent/chaperone to help choose the best songs for your party.
Other Tips
✔ Stay safe! Please make sure that everyone keeps their shoes on during the entire party.
✔ Do take a break in the lounge! Children are welcome in our lounge area. However, no children are allowed to sit at the bar.
✔ Feel free to enjoy an adult beverage out in the bar area. OLCC regulations state no alcoholic beverage can be taken into any of our suites if there are any minors (people under 21) in that suite.
✔ Get in touch with us before your party if you have any questions or concerns!
2012 Video Contest Official Rules
Announcing Voicebox’s 3rd Annual Anniversary Video Contest
Entry Requirements
To help celebrate our fourth anniversary, Voicebox invites you to help replace the boring old CDG of our top hundred songs by creating your own karaoke video. And you don’t have to be a professional video editor to participate. We’re looking for anything from animations to live action, from cue cards (a la Bob Dylan) to bouncing balls (mastered in this video), as long as the displayed lyrics are synchronized to the actual vocal syllable being sung—not just the word. No need to digitally superimpose, so be creative!
All entries must consist of a video file synchronized with the karaoke version of a song from Voicebox’s top song list (see list below and buy the best karaoke version of your song at TriceraSoft, Karaoke Version, or Karaoke Channel). The visual content of the video can be anything, so long as it is in good taste.
Videos must be the original work of the entrant. Entrants give Voicebox permission to 1) post video entries on its Facebook page, 2) use the video entires without restriction as part of Voicebox’s karaoke song library, 3) use the video entries for any other purpose, 4) publish the name(s) of entrant(s) in connection with this contest or in the karaoke song library.
Last Year’s Winning Video
A Video From Last Year’s Contest
Eligible, Legal Song Versions
Videos must be synchronized with legally obtained karaoke versions of one of Voicebox’s top 100 songs (see below for songs that are off the table and see our site for the top 100 list). Entrants must purchase the karaoke version of the song themselves. Due to copyright law, Voicebox cannot provide the karaoke version for entrants. Links to required karaoke versions are listed below, and none cost more than $2.99. Entrants may present their receipt for the song purchase as a coupon for food, beverages, or karaoke at Voicebox. Voicebox has NO financial interest or affiliation with TriceraSoft, Karaoke Version, or Karaoke Channel.
Song List
Choose any of our top 100 songs, viewable here, that does not already have a video.
Songs listed below already have incredible videos from previous years’ contest. They’re off the table this year. Sorry!
Search for and buy your favorite karaoke version on TriceraSoft, Karaoke Version, or Karaoke Channel.
- Don’t Stop Believin’ video
- Bohemian Rhapsody video
- Sweet Caroline video
- Poker Face video
- I Will Survive video
- Summer Nights video
Technical Requirements
To be considered valid entries:
- Videos should have a title screen that lists the song title, song artist(s), video composers, etc.
- Videos must be at least standard definition quality: 640×480 pixels. Higher resolution is preferred.
- The karaoke version audio track should be embedded in the video file and encoded either as PCM or as MP3.
- Video tracks should be compressed with a lossless codec — or with a lossy codec (H.264, MPEG-2, Xvid, DivX, Quicktime) set to very high quality settings. Entries that are unreadable by VLC media player or that are over-compressed may be rejected.
- Videos files must be submitted in person or by mail on either USB flash drive or on DVD-ROM media. Do not submit fully authored DVDs, only DVD-ROMs with video files on them. Entry media may be returned to entrants by pick-up only after the video files have been copied and verified.
- If you have questions or think these tips sound more complicated than they really are, please contact us.
Deadlines

November 15th: All submissions must be received by mail or hand delivery

The winner will be selected by popular Facebook vote: all video entries will be posted on Voicebox’s Facebook page, and the winner is the video that gets the most likes. Each video will only win one prize, so if the crowd favorite has been awarded any other prize, the next-highest liked video will win the crowd favorite prize.

Voicebox Turns Three!
Help us celebrate 1,095 best nights of the week
Voicebox opened the doors at NW 21st and Hoyt three years ago, and since that day we’ve been making friends, hosting incredible parties and growing in almost every way imaginable. For the month of November we’re thanking our fans with a calendar of events and specials:
- Exciting new menu from chef Janis Martin of Tanuki Izakaya
- Happy Hour food and drink all day, every Sunday in November
- Mark Bosnian “Mega Lesson” on Wednesday, November 16th at 7:30pm
- Our second annual Voicebox Video Contest
- And ask about other fan appreciation specials throughout the month!
New Menu
To help us celebrate in style, we are rolling out an entirely new menu from local chef Janis Martin, whose Japanese Izakaya Tanuki was a favorite spot for many of our fans. We partnered with her to create a range of exciting new options, from noodle dishes to a variety of snacks that are perfect for sharing.
The new menu has also inspired new saké cocktail pairings, while our list of unique sakés constantly grows and improves. We look forward to making our kitchen another reason you’ll want to keep coming back.
Happy Hour Sundays
On Sundays in November, happy hour is more like happy day. Enjoy happy hour pricing on food and drink from open to close every Sunday of the month.
This is a perfect opportunity to try a new saké and sample treats from our new menu. Sunday has always been one of our favorite nights of the week, and for our anniversary month it’s an even better place to gather your crew for a great time.
Video Contest
For the second year in what we hope becomes a long-running annual tradition, the Voicebox Video Contest is a call for locally produced karaoke videos that will replace the boring, stock CDG videos for our top twenty songs of all time. yes, this means that every time your group plays Don’t Stop Believin’, you’ll be treated to this local video (by people you may even know), instead of some scrolling text.
We’re accepting video entries now, and we’ll be showing off the winners on our Facebook page and here at Voicebox in the month of November. If you or anyone you know is cut out of video immortality, let them know about the contest and let’s fill up our top twenty with amazing videos from our fans right here in Portland.
